Deaf Culture and Communication Access
This course explores the lived experiences of Deaf individuals as they navigate communication access across education, employment, healthcare, family life, technology, community participation, and public services. Through authentic ASL narratives, historical perspectives, and personal stories, participants will examine how communication barriers, accessibility laws, interpreting services, assistive technologies, self-advocacy, and evolving societal attitudes have shaped Deaf experiences and opportunities across generations.
By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate:
- Comprehension of Deaf Culture and Communication Access concepts by accurately recognizing key vocabulary, communication access terminology, assistive technologies, and factual details presented in the narratives; accessibility solutions, self-advocacy strategies, and cultural perspectives; and applying Deaf cultural frameworks to scenario-based questions involving communication access and inclusion.
- Learners will also differentiate and compare communication experiences across a variety of settings, including education, employment, healthcare, family interactions, technology use, and community participation; and identify overarching themes that connect communication rights, accessibility, self-advocacy, technological innovation, cultural identity, and community engagement across multiple Deaf narratives, as measured through a multiple-choice assessment.
