On the Job: Deaf Experiences in the Workplace
This course explores the real-life work experiences of Deaf individuals across a variety of industries, including retail, manufacturing, technical trades, creative professions, self-employment, and service-based careers. Through authentic personal narratives, participants will examine how Deaf workers found employment, developed skills, navigated workplace communication barriers, adapted to changing job markets, and built meaningful careers over time.
The stories in this course span multiple generations and workplace environments, highlighting themes such as first jobs, financial independence, factory work, career transitions, job loss, workplace integrity, mentorship, self-advocacy, and the evolution of communication access. Participants will gain insight into the strategies Deaf individuals have used to succeed in environments with limited accommodations, as well as the impact of technology, including texting, videophones, and other communication tools, on workplace inclusion.
By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate:
- Comprehension of Deaf workplace experiences and employment-related concepts by accurately recognizing key vocabulary, workplace terminology, historical references, communication strategies, and factual details presented in the narratives; selecting accurate summaries and explanations of workplace challenges, communication barriers, and employment experiences; and applying Deaf cultural and workplace access concepts to scenario-based questions.
- Learners will also differentiate and compare workplace experiences across industries, generations, and communication environments; evaluate how workplace policies, communication access, technology, and personal decision-making influenced employment outcomes; and identify overarching themes connecting Deaf identity, workplace culture, communication access, resilience, and career development across multiple narratives, as measured through a multiple-choice assessment.
