Living Deaf: Interests, Identity, and Community
This course explores the lived experiences of Deaf individuals through stories about hobbies, creative pursuits, skilled trades, lifelong learning, faith, family, service, and community involvement. Through authentic personal narratives, participants will examine how interests and passions contribute to identity development, self-expression, personal fulfillment, and connections within the Deaf community. Topics include mechanical problem-solving, artistic and creative expression, sports, advocacy, lifelong learning, faith, community service, and the ways Deaf individuals transform personal interests into meaningful contributions to others.
By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate comprehension of Deaf Culture and identity-related concepts by accurately recognizing key vocabulary, personal interests, and factual details presented in the narratives; selecting accurate summaries and explanations of individual experiences, values, and motivations; and applying Deaf cultural knowledge to scenario-based questions. Learners will also differentiate and compare the diverse ways Deaf individuals pursue creativity, problem-solving, learning, recreation, and community engagement; evaluate how family influences, faith, personal interests, and social connections contribute to identity formation and quality of life; and identify overarching themes that connect self-expression, lifelong learning, service, and community across multiple narratives, as measured through a multiple-choice assessment.
Recommended for intermediate or advanced ASL learners. This course is on-demand and features ASL videos with English captions.
